What is STAN?

STAN is an acronym for:

Stop
Think
Assess
No excuses

It’s an acronym known far and wide in the construction industry, and it’s very close to our hearts at RJD. When we’re providing muckaway or grab hire services, or supplying aggregate supplies, STAN is always our first thought – we encourage all of our clients to do the same. Let’s break it down…

Stop

Rushing into any important task is a recipe for disaster. Before you can even consider assessing a situation you have to stop! This means no distractions and a calm demeanour. It doesn’t matter how busy you are, taking a moment to properly stop will help you to get things right first time.

Think

Consider the options you have at your disposal. Do you need help with this particular task? Are there any Health & Safety measures that need to be considered? Make sure you think about everything that you need to get the job done right first time and if necessary take steps to fill any gaps.

Assess

You might be wondering how this differs from ‘Think’ – there is a link but they are different. When you assess a situation you are considering all of the possible outcomes. This is where risk management is extremely important. You must take steps to ensure that risk is reduced to the minimum possible, and that you have clearly communicated contingency plans for a worst-case scenario.

No excuses

This point is self-explanatory really, there are no excuses! By following these steps you reduce the risk of harm or injury to a person, and damage to your project.
